About The Artwork

My fellowship at the Bunting Institute at Radcliffe College was almost over. My sculptural project was titled "100 Things a Girl Can Make", I was at about number 20 when I decided to return to watercolors. However. after working so physically in sculpture I was very comfortable making the leap to large scale work. Here, in the Red Fish Vase( the actual vase I saw in a museum, the fish merrily swimming around the vase) is tilted and almost falling off the table. Other techniques used are wet in wet in the green Malachite wallpaper I painted the vase bright red and placed it on a table with a small Greek statue in white.

These large watercolor and gouache works on paper (usually 140lb Arches hot press) are figuratively inspired but painted with a vibrant physically engaged approach. The images are drawn from my life experiences. I use crayon resist, wet and wet, sgraffito ( using the back of my fingernails to scrape away the paint or use the flat side of a screwdriver to uncover a colorful under painting). I get a thrill when I take a chance and push the image but can still limit myself to a restrictive palette. I give the composition a twisted perspective, the picture builds up energy and the slanting images feel like they are slipping off the edge of the paper. You are seeing the image from my POV. I use hot and zestful saturated colors. I look at still life with a fresh perceptiveness, humor and whimsy: a joi de vivre approach where "less is more than meets the eye". I studied at the Massachusetts College of Arts, I have work in the Fogg Art Museum, MIT, The Rose Art Museum, and the Paine-Webber Collection. I also work with industrial grade aluminum foil but I am currently not offering this work at Saatchi. I was the featured artist, sponsored by Interall Srl, Aluminum 2000, Verona Italy this June.
