Opening of the exhibition "Bees" at the Solvay Contemporary Art Center in Krakow, November 2017
For the first time in many years I painted a set still life. There was a jug of sunflowers on the window sill in the studio, not a picture, but real flowers. The painting was very difficult and had several phases, realistic in the horizontal, expressive in the vertical direction and ended with abstraction. A lot of paint, a lot of color, thick texture. Abstraction best reflected the nature of my sunflowers. After Van Gogh, only abstract sunflowers can exist.
This is a work from a series that was created by painting the previous painting. The last layer is abstract. it is a farewell to artwork that did not stand the test of time. That is why on the back there is a painted old signature. I do not want to remember the previous layer. The abstract layer is the most important.

I move between different styles, combining abstraction with figuration. Concerning themes and my color palette, I have no restrictions, with one exception: I avoid dramatism in depicted situations. Only the scale between extensive backgrounds and minor human figures or vehicles is constant. I am inspired by Dutch painting, especially by Peter Breughel. I like to think of my paintings as a kind of poetry without words. http://www.artminnow.com/index.php/2017/04/14/a-conversation-with-grazyna-smalej/
