About The Artwork

This pieces uses deconstructed, simple figures., The subdued Prussian blue and turqoise background contrast with fiery cadmium reds and oranges. The layers of impasto underpainting and foreground lines made by oil paintstick are intended to create the feel of a primitive wood block print. By scoring the surface layers an effect of texture and depth combine to give this piece its essential presence. The title suggests a ritual narrative that is intended to compliment the color and textures. This piece was painted over a period of two months in Spring of 2016. The canvas depth is four inches so the piece stands off the wall and creating the feeling that the piece is even larger than it actually. This piece dominates its space without being obnoxious. It really wants to be the focus of whatever wall it inhabits.

The colors from an early 1960’s American kitchenette set. Photographs of juvenile offenders from the 1950s. 1930’s cartoon serials. These are some of the visual building blocks of my most recent work. My practice is a manifestation of a dialogue happening between my ears; sometimes intentional, sometimes accidental. My most recent series are fictional narratives mirroring my current reality. My current practice explores narratives constructed with found objects and obscure historical imagery. The mediums are assembled around an internal dialogue and manifest into a more tactile realm; my gut reactions around the divergence of American dominant culture family paradigms and the reality of the modern working class experience.
