Selective Memory offers the viewer a time traveler’s glance into the private lives of a mid-century California family. Shot on super 8 film in 1959-1966, these photographic images are Robin Repp's own very personal memories, sometimes chaotic, lifted and revisited as a moment in time. We are there for intimate, family events, enlarged to abstraction, blurred and faded by time. Unreliable memory gives way to sometimes barely recognizable images of a cross-country trip to California on highway 66 in a ‘57 Ford Station Wagon, a classic wooden power boat on Newport Bay, Mouseketeer Roy signing a cartoon at Disneyland and new outfits on Christmas morning. Like a personal Zapruder film, viewed over and over again, Robin Repp stops on just a few fleeting frames for a brief glimpse of the past. Archival Pigment on Hahnemuehle Fine Art Paper. My work explores the concept of anticipation of the future or the unknown. With influences as diverse as Thomas Struth, Dorthea Lange, Elmer Bischoff, and Minor White, I have been using infrared photography, painting, printmaking, the figure in the landscape and social commentary topics to tell my story. Ever since Berkeley, I have been fascinated by protest and social issues set in the landscape. What starts out as often simple white or abstracted figures against a dark background, leaves the viewer with a sense of dreamlike questioning. Who are these people and what is going on here?
