About The Artwork

"TREES OF LIFE Fine Art print in Limited Edition of 3 (different sizes 45x30 cm, 75x50 cm, 105x70 cm) + I AP Will your coarse roots meet my heart in the ground? So concludes the poem Trees, by Federico Garcia Lorca; the poet asking if long roots, coursing through the earth, will ever meet up with his buried heart. It is bound to happen, sooner or later, in these photographs, through this poetic metaphor, staged much like a theatrical drama. The black and white photos are presented in high contrast making them seem almost like drawings but it is Nature herself who has drawn these contours and varying shades. Here tree and man meet, as in a fable or a poem; they almost switch places, one becoming the allegory for the other. These trees, wrinkled, gnarled, twisted and contorted as if by the cumbersome and insolent weight of time, remind us of man. Time leaves its mark on them, like it does the faces of the elderly, whose wisdom is wrought under the heavy, crushing burden of time that they bear, curling them up like dried leaves in exchange for knowledge, experience and a raw strength, mimicking the thick and persistent roots that come out of the earth and puncture through the asphalt. Trees and men both ancient, centuries old, hunchbacked and stooped towards the ground that gathers up their ashes, bringing to life however, an almost inexplicable solemnity. They are magnificent in their rough bark exterior. The threadlike roots deeply embedded within the earth juxtaposed with the knotted branches, reaching like hands thirsty for light, towards the sky. Trees, like creatures between earth and sky, and who knows what else, as the poet Garcia Lorca said, are not something springing heavenward from below, but rather have fallen from the skies, violently sticking into the earth. Trees! Are you arrows fallen from the sky? What terrible warriors hurl you forth? Were they stars? Your songs come from the souls of birds, From the eyes of God, From the perfect passion…… Just like man, created by God above and hurled to earth only to eventually return, trees, as seen through the enchanting frames of Mimmi Moretti, tell the tale of man and his life, divided between the heavens and earth and the promise of eternity."

Mimmi Moretti, whose real name is Domenico, was born in Catania in 1966. A few months later the family moved to Paris. It was in the French capital that he was culturally informed and where he began, thanks to his uncle, to take pictures and familiarize himself with the dark room. At the age of 20 he started working as a freelance photographer, collaborating with a few magazines. He left college before graduating to work for a German multinational company. A few years later he left that to pursue his own entrepreneurial endeavors during the dot-com business boom. Towards the late 90s he returned to photography and began experimenting with the new digital photographic technology that was dawning and definitively made the transition to digital photography in 2002. It was in 2014 that he first displayed his photographs in a collective exhibit in London. He loves to range from varying subjects and themes, even if, at the moment, he prefers industrial architecture and societal subject matter. He is always attracted to technical experimentation and he is always, continuously developing different and original styles. His studies in Humanities have often influenced his main projects.
