I license some of my images as commercial stock photography and on occasion ones I’ve created for personal purposes wind up doing double duty as stock photography. This image, though, went in the opposite direction. I originally created a variation of it for stock, and later tweaked it to create a more personal expression. In that original version a man was standing on top of the hill reaching up to almost, but not quite grab the bar that hangs below the balloon. When contemplating its use for personal rather than commercial expression I felt that the story of the man reaching for the bar was too clear and unambiguous, too on point. I’ve learned by trial and error that mages that can be reduced to clear, simple statements simply sell better as stock photography than those that ask more from the viewer, but in my more personal work I aim for something different. Removing the man left an empty space and a less perfectly balanced image, but also created mystery and ambiguity that made it more interesting to me. Of course, after removing the man I could have repositioned the balloon to restore the original compositional balance, but that would have defeated my purpose. After a decades-long career as a commercial photographer I’ve turned my hand to producing more personal imagery. In my work I strive to evoke emotional and psychological truths by creating enigmatic, dream-like scenes steeped in symbolism. They depict impossibilities, paradoxes, and incongruities, but all rendered with precise, seamless realism. I’m inspired by the Surrealists, as well as by Renaissance art. Ideas for my images are sparked in a number of different ways, and each evolves as I weave them together from the raw materials of my photos and my imagination. Experimenting with different combinations of image elements until they take on a life of their own, I then begin the exacting detail work of making the impossible seem believable Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, I have lived for many years with my beautiful and inspiring wife on a steep hill in San Francisco, near our children and grandchildren.
