Afternoon Drink Photograph

A photo walk through empty alleyways on a bright Fall afternoon reveals a stranger sat alone for that moment, partly obscured by shade, partly basked in sunlight. I felt as though I was staring into an Edward Hopper painting with tones of Jack Vettriano. The work of Stephen Shore and William Eggleston is always something that lurks in the back of my mind as I absorb my surroundings. Having moved to Canada from England in my late 20s, I still retain a sense of unfamiliarity and romance with the kinds of commonplace scenes I see walking around Edmonton. My relationship with my environment is one of almost ordinary distance, in that I often feel as though I'm tourist in an otherwise banal circumstance. It's exactly that vague disharmony that inspires me to perpetually try and capture it.
