About The Artwork

This was taken in Brighton, and it was a particularly beautiful day. I was fortunate to have the perfect location up high, with no distractions of the view below of this ideal setting of happy sunbathers, blue and white deck chairs, beige beach and perfect blue sky and sea. There are even people with boats out at sea. Which is unusual for the United kingdom, as we have such volatile weather. The figures of the sunbathers are so distinct, however they appear as if almost painted with the shadows on the bright beige beach. It's this overall feeling of the image that it appears like a painting with the clear definitive lines of each figure. The pebbles on the beach, appear like painted sand. I was inspired by the perfect day it represented, however we all know pebbles are hard to walk on and the channel waters are generally pretty cold. The image feels positive and optimistic, like a perfect day. However with all good things comes discomfort. I find this interesting, that this image represents the ideal we all crave, but that ideal can never truly exist. As its in our human nature to feel discomfort.
