About The Artwork

*** Published on the Vogue Italia / PhotoVogue website 7th May 2019 *** Battersea Power Station is an iconic and well-loved landmark in London. This image shows the construction site, frozen in time on Saturday 16th March 2019. No workers were present. A set of steps near the front of the image invites the viewer to step up and into the scene to explore. Despite the lack of humanity - we see the highly detailed evidence of industry; Cement mixers, ladders, storage boxes, cables and much more are scattered throughout this desolate site. The Power Station itself is partly clad in a protective suit during the development process. The thing that inspired me to photograph this rapidly shifting urban landscape is the cranes. An abundance of high-rise cranes dominates the skyline, all powered-down for the weekend and all seemingly facing in the same direction. The cranes are asleep - but they seem to be taking over - like some kind of science fiction. Originally from Cheshire (UK), I started out painting with watercolour and later studied technical drawing as part of my engineering qualifications. Photography offered the perfect blend of art and science and my fascination began; travelling widely with my engineering work I found urban artistic inspiration in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Toronto. Settling in London over 20 years ago, I now live among neighbourhoods and buildings which support my passion for abstract, architectural and street photography. Influenced by my background, one could say I shoot with the eyes of an impressionistic painter and the mind of an engineer. I take inspiration from everyday objects, surfaces and scenes which are often transformed into the extraordinary, surreal or abstract. I'm drawn to urban oddities, colourful collisions, deep perspective and playful geometry. To capture the most compelling stories I prefer to shoot spontaneously, unbound by genre or subject. My images are often featured on the BBC and VOGUE websites, and have been collected across 4 continents. All images ©2000-2017 Pete Edmunds. All rights reserved.
