About The Artwork

The first iteration of "Bar Street" in Sanlutin near the diplomatic quarters in Beijing after Nixon first visited China in 1972 up until the late 90s was a playground for westerners (typically expatriate businessmen or male diplomats, journalists and spies) and curious local Chinese, that was far different from the sterilized and cool Sanlutin of today. After twenty-five years of isolation, and the violent mass movement of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution that officially ended in 1976 with Mao's death, China was ready to party.
