“10 metres down, I found myself hovering between two worlds. Below, an enormous school of fish covered the bottom as far as I could see. Above, a single Cormorant patrolled the surface, catching its breath and peering down at a potential underwater feast. The cormorant, better designed for swimming ...

Henley Spiers is an underwater photographer, writer, and expedition leader, passionately driven by aquatic wildlife and habitats. His imagery consistently garners high acclaim and Henley has fast become one of the most highly decorated underwater wildlife photographers in the world. His work has been awarded in the most prestigious photographic competitions, including the Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Nature Photographer of the Year, Underwater Photographer of the Year, Ocean Photographer of the Year, and Siena International Photo Contest. “Submerged is when I feel most at ease, filled with immense calm, and wonder at the life below. It’s a hard feeling to convey in words, and taking up photography was a way of transmitting the beauty of the marine world where words failed.” Henley is author of two books and writes regularly for a broad list of publications, including Oceanographic, Coast, Hakai, and Plongez! magazines. His pictures have also been published in The Times, Der Spiegel, and The Economist, amongst many others. Since 2019, Henley has been an honoured invitee to the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment programme, joining a select group of the globe’s foremost underwater photographers. “For me, nature is art, and the ultimate ambition is to create imagery which embraces the beauty and art inherent to nature.” Prior to underwater photography, Henley had a career as a dive instructor, working in Indonesia, the Philippines and Saint Lucia. Although he would be the first to admit that he can still do more to help, Henley has collaborated in the field of ocean conservation with Blue Marine, Mission Blue, Bertarelli Foundation, Marine Conservation Society, Marine Megafauna Foundation, Devon Wildlife Trust, Cornwall Wildlife trust, and Thunnus UK. Half-French and half-British, he lives in Devon, U.K., with wife and frequent co-collaborator Jade, and their two young daughters. “You know, you could look at any one of Henley’s pictures all day long. You’d want to stick them on the wall.” Kathy Moran, Senior Natural History Editor, National Geographic
