About The Artwork

“10 metres down, I found myself hovering between two worlds. Below, an enormous school of fish covered the bottom as far as I could see. Above, a single Cormorant patrolled the surface, catching its breath and peering down at a potential underwater feast. The cormorant, better designed for swimming than flying, would dive down at speed, aggressively pursuing the fish. The school would move in unison to escape the bird’s sharp beak, making it difficult to isolate a single target. More often than not, the bird returned to the surface empty handed and peace would momentarily be restored. I would squint up at the sunny surface, trying to keep track of the predator and anticipate the next underwater raid. This image captures the hostile, black silhouette of the cormorant as it dives down onto its prey, who for a brief moment, remain unaware of the danger above." Location: Espiritu Santo Island, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Limited edition of 10, print only, created on Hahnemühle FineArt Pearl 285gsm, an archival quality, cotton paper, with a high quality, thick, and slightly glossy finish.

Starting his professional career in diving as an instructor, working in the Philippines, Indonesia and Saint Lucia, Henley Spiers later fell in love with underwater imagery and made the transition to full-time photographer.  Since then, Henley has amassed a prolific series of award-winning images, including two category wins in the Underwater Photographer of the Year, first prize in the Black & White category of Nature Photographer of the Year, winner of the Ocean Geographic David Doubilet portfolio award, runner-up in the Ocean Photographer of the Year, and highly commended in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Henley is perhaps best known for his black and white imagery, showcasing the beauty of the aquatic world with distinctive minimalism. Fine art prints of his work now adorn walls around the globe. In 2019, Henley was honoured to be invited by Blancpain to the Edition Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment programme, joining a select group of the world’s foremost underwater photographers. Henley’s photography has been published in the likes of The Sunday Times, The Economist, Der Spiegel, and Sierra Magazine, and frequently graces magazine covers. Although he would be the first to admit that he can still do more to help, Henley has so far enjoyed collaborating in the field of ocean conservation with Blue Marine, Mission Blue, Bertarelli Foundation, Marine Conservation Society, Marine Megafauna Foundation, Devon Wildlife Trust, Cornwall Wildlife trust, and Thunnus UK. Henley lives in Devon with his wife, Jade, and their two young daughters. Henley on Diving: "I believe diving is much more akin to meditation than a sport. Being underwater is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a different world and get close to some fantastic wildlife. The ocean drew me in first, far before photography, from marathon childhood snorkel sessions to abandoning a conventional career path for life as a dive professional, and then underwater photographer. Submerged is when I feel most at ease, filled with immense calm, and wonder at the life below. It’s a hard feeling to convey in words, and taking up photography was a way of transmitting the beauty of the marine world where words failed." Henley on Photography: "Photography honed my appreciation of beauty, slowing me down to the point where I’ll happily spend hours observing a single fish.
