About The Artwork

In the bustling heart of Grand Central Station, New York City, 2019, a woman of non-European descent gracefully sprints through the terminal. It is disheartening how easily stereotypes can infiltrate our descriptions when discussing individuals like her. The very word "race" remains a troublesome relic of the 19th century, a term that inaccurately separates humanity based on biological distinctions that do not truly exist. Its continued usage baffles me, as we urgently need an alternative lexicon that entirely dismantles the fallacy of "race" while enabling comprehensive dialogues about the systemic and institutionalized prejudices stemming from misconceptions about skin color. These misconceptions perpetuate the subjugation, disempowerment, and erosion of social agency among non-European descendants. Her sprint, perhaps to catch a train, can inadvertently trigger subjective, prejudiced biases within any of us—biases residing solely within our minds. These stereotypes emerge not from her but from the societal conditioning we have all undergone. Had she been of European descent, none of these damaging stereotypes would likely surface. This underscores a harsh reality that consistently echoes the experiences of those who are not of European descent—a reality often drowned out by society's prevailing narrative. Yet, in her sprint, I find strength, a testament that neuroplasticity—the capacity of our brains to adapt and change—holds the potential to replace damaging stereotypes with images tied to positive narratives. It is a promise that, with time and collective effort, we can reshape our perceptions and create a world where individuals are seen for their unique essence rather than preconceived notions based on their heritage. Please refer to description in the work titled "Mirror" in this series.

www.MA9.co Fine art photography by Marco Aurelio. ARTIST STATEMENT I photograph the individual on the street to create site-specific visual ethnographies. I also photograph still-life as a way of exploring the beauty of design and form in the natural world. BIO Born and raised at the foot of the South American Andes within a family of generational farmers, I was exposed to native oral traditions, pre-Columbian indigenous art and cosmologies, magical-realism experiences, and the sociopolitical dynamics of the region. I earned a Liberal Arts degree from New York University, which encompassed studies in European history, anthropology, and Western philosophy. Starting as a self-taught photographer, I enhanced my craft by attending courses at The International Center of Photography and The School of Visual Arts in New York City. Following a strong academic curiosity, I ventured into archaeology and anthropology at The City College at CUNY and deepened my understanding of writing, music history, and anthropology at Columbia University. Journeys through photojournalism and portrait photography, combined with interests as varied as ontology, Eastern philosophy, physics, and the metaphysical elements in the fiction of Jorge Luis Borges, continue to shape and inform my fine art photography practice. Today, New York City is both my home and a creative sanctuary.
