ismaïl bahri: Ligne I wish viewer to think about how photography break our real-time experience into mechanical photographic frames. What is our most honest interpretation of time? Breath/ heart beats, etc are some biological interpretation that human body has to experience time. What is appear in this work is a photograph of a person's breath through a duration of time on one full roll of 35mm color film. A little bit about the process: I am having someone standing in front of camera holding a candle in front of chest in a dark space. The breath associate with the fire and transformed into the movement of fire/light. Instead of taking pictures, I was moving the 35mm film on the camera back, recording this event. I am very interested in the idea of system of time and photography. As Roland berthas illustrated in the book Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography, “Cameras, in short were clocks for seeing”. I am interested in seeing how photography and time unfolding one onto the other. Since the invention of photography, the image-making process has evolved from accurately rendering to subjectively depicting realities. I’m interested in photographic processes, and as I explore more photographic techniques, I realize that photography makes possible more than the representation of a single point of view, a single moment, or a recording of exactly what was in front of the camera’s lens at a given moment. Beyond the subject matter of the photograph, there are the materials, the actions of and choices made by artist, and the time involved in the image making process. By using different materials and the form of art my works challenges the established photographic process. Instead of the control required to make a “perfect” photograph, I deliberately leave the results to chance.
