Bridge Over River Kwai Cremation # 1 In October 1990, a month after I moved to Thailand, a mass grave was uncovered near the location of the Bridge Over The River Kwai in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. Over a period of several days, over 900 skeletal remains were uncovered of prisoners of war who had worked on the infamous bridge that the Japanese forced the prisoners to consturct over the River Kwai in order to move military supplies and solders for an invasion of India. The notorious Burma-Siam railway, built by Commonwealth, Dutch and American prisoners of war, was a Japanese project driven by the need for improved communications to support the large Japanese army in Burma. During its construction, approximately 13,000 prisoners of war died and were buried along the railway. An estimated 80,000 to 100,000 civilians also died in the course of the project, chiefly forced labour brought from Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, or conscripted in Thailand and Burma. Two labour forces, one based in Siam and the other in Burma, worked from opposite ends of the line towards the center In November 1990, the remains were cremated in an emotional ceremony at a Buddhist Temple in Bangkok. The local and international press had not been notified of the ceremony, so I was the only foreign photographer present. I submitted a series of photos and a short story to the Bangkok Post and it was published in January 1991.
