About The Artwork

Unity Residential Tower by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris pierces the City of Liverpool skyline and towers above the adjacent brick terraces. Completed in 2007 it is pictured here in 2017 undergoing facade repairs. This humorous perspective struck me as appearing almost robotic even transformer like or maybe something from a scene out of the war of the worlds? As though the upper penthouse was going to swivel to look towards me as I appeared into view and then stoop down to look closer. On further reflection, I was struck by the colour of the glazing reflecting the light from the iconic River Mersey and learned the facade is styled on dazzle "camouflage" patterns. Apparently, the dazzle pattern used on ships caught the attention of Picasso and fellow Cubists. It was not intended as camouflage to conceal but was designed so as to mislead the enemy as to a ships course and heading making it difficult to assess as a target. From other perspectives, the residential and commercial towers complement the Liverpool City skyline as viewed from the Mersey and won a RIBA tall building award in 2007. When you read the design narrative on the architects web site it all makes perfect sense.

Alan Sayers (December 1959) is an architectural and landscape photographer originally from Manchester and Cumbria, UK. After several years in the Middle East he now resides in Poland travelling extensively. Alan was captivated and intrigued by photography at an early age picking up a medium format film camera from a church jumble sale when he was just 8 years old. Formal photography training at University allowed him to become proficient in technical aspects and in film processing before embracing digital mediums and alternative imaging processes. He gained a BSc in Land Administration/Estate Management and earned an MSc in Construction Project Management. He went on to build an accomplished international career in construction, architecture, and engineering. After freelancing as an amateur for many years he dedicated himself to photography full time becoming fully professional in 2016 working on building an international body of work which he is now making public. Currently, we are in a realm within which photography occupies a wide spectrum spanning "traditional" mediums, digital art, and capturing reality. In his search for meaning, Alan has adopted imaging and the photographic medium as his voice and means of expression. Always a keen observer of life empathetic to people and his surroundings Alan sees the world with deep insight and in unique ways having learned to harness feeling and emotion as part of his creative journey. In an approach aimed at simplification, abstraction and minimalism Alan's style captures such matters as the essentials of composition, rhythm, colour, pattern and geometry and incorporates the technical detail and the clarity to offer unique perspectives. His practice also represents a quest for personal discovery unlocking to the viewer the concept that art is in everything, the world has meaning and was conceived with purpose and value.
