Joshua Kristal was born in 1971 in Detroit and raised in Detroit and Huntington Woods. He graduated from an intensive 3-year photography program in Lansing, Michigan in 1994. Over his 20-year career he has worked for publications including Time magazine, The New York Times, Outside, Automobile, the Huffington Post, Vice, Story, The American, HOUR and Budget Living and many others. He has exhibited his work in New York City, Detroit, Royal Oak, Lansing and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In 2004, he volunteered his photography services for a UNICEF allied non-profit organization in Calcutta, India. In 2005 he was honored too work at the United Nations to serve as one of the official General Assembly staff photographers. In 2009 he taught photography in the Peruvian Amazon as part of an anthropology project. In 2014 Getty Images and Lean-In.org awarded him the “Artists Grant to work with a nonprofit organization in Southern Ethiopia that encourages young women to stay in school and out of early marriage and pregnancy. Most recently he returned from Madagascar where he worked and volunteered for several nonprofit organizations. Working in the reportage style of photography, he strives to document and highlight details of modern life and sub-culture that mostly go over-looked and to capture moments of time that express something greater then the moments themselves.
