About The Artwork

I walked all day around Havana, much of the time not seeing other tourists and being quite off the beaten path. However, once I got to the famous Malecón there was an abundance of the best of the classic cars being hired by tourists for rides along the water. This purple car was my favorite of those that passed by. It was important to me to get a more authentically Cuban experience versus that of a foreign tourist. The challenging experience that ensued resulted in a return home feeling much more present, relaxed and gracious. I shot this in March of 2016, the week before President Obama's first step on the island. This photograph captures a poignant time in history with a unique perspective as a female photographer traveling there alone. I spent time in Havana and Trinidad, working on a body of work called, "Through the Lens of an American Woman Alone in Cuba: The Week Before Obama's Historic Visit." A selection of these images is available as limited edition fine art prints and the book of photojournalism of the same name will be released in November, 2016.
