In the series Close Cuts I was looking at Hollywoods obsession with youth and beauty. I used polymer clay to construct segments of the body as if looking through the lens of a camera. I was thinking about the malleability of human flesh in the pursuit of beauty. At the time I was making this my mother developed breast cancer so the work took on a new meaning - body augmentation out of necessity to halt the process of disease as apposed to plastic surgery to maintain superficial western beauty ideals.
