PULLING AT THE HEARTSTRINGS WITH THE NEURONS OF THE MIND. Composition 258 – "Beetle" (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, 2017) is part of the Platonic Views series. These images are not real. They are not truthful. They are at the same time, not meant to lie, confuse or obfuscate. In fact they are intended to clarify that indeed, they are NOT truthful. They are captured from reality, however what is shown is not what there is, but what I wish there to be. The images are platonic views, idealised views. These images say to the viewer that this is not reality. The image has been transformed into something that could be real, but is in fact something I conjured up. In this particular case the perspective and straightness of the lines are impossible in reality. In my mind this image represents a lot of what Mexico is. The Volkswagen Beetle ('El Bocho') has been an icon in Mexico since the mid-60s. It was the largest manufacturer of the car in the world and carried on making it long after it had been discontinued in Europe. Here we find an old, beat-up Bocho against a confining wall painted 'rosa mexicano' ('Mexican pink') and beyond the wall wealth and luxury. Haves and have nots. Opposites. I ask the viewer not to suspend disbelief, but enjoy the image while knowing that, whatever it is, it’s not truth. I’m pulling at the heartstrings with the neurons of the mind. I hope.
