Christmas has historically been a difficult time for me. The frantic family festivities and forays into swarms of determined consumers filing in and out of department stores fills me with cold dread. The festive period consists of long car trips to few and far between family members. Cold drives thawed by blasted car heating, making you rosy cheeked and itchy; pulling up to service stations with the achingly bright lights, pungent food smells and damp toilet seats. And inevitably there is the tears. Not before Christmas. Sometimes on Christmas. Always after Christmas. As the swell of expectation and wist mingles and evaporates into emptiness and disappointment. Misery aches. But on this December day, I prepared myself for the festive travels. Dry-eyed and reticent, silently awed by the beauty of the clearing rain spattered on the windows, giving way to the glow of the sun as it descended.
