This is one of my first artworks that exploit the use of coloured lights on various types of surfaces and materials. I was starting to play with modest home objects and see how they react to different lights, when I found the inspiration for a kind of homely astronomy. This is my favorite of the Eclipse series, in which a set of concentric light circles overlap one another to create the magic game of a conceptual and visual eclipse. This photo is printed under acrylic glass. All prints are numbered and signed.

Paolo Staccioli was born in Rome, Italy, and has been living in Amsterdam for the past 15 years. Before finding his way as a fine art photographer, Staccioli has gone through various paths and done many things, including working as a model in the Berlin underground scene. He’s finally settled in the Netherlands and works in his studio in the centre of Amsterdam. “I like to play with my world and, like throwing dice on a table gives unpredictable results, so I throw lights at ordinary objects to give rise to new and unpredictable configurations of forms and colours” says Paolo Staccioli when talking about his creations. Most of his photography sits at the crossroad between abstract painting and reproduction of real objects. His ‘Light Paintings’ series capture the aesthetic qualities and the magical power of natural and RGB light, shadow and reflection to create unusual and surprising shapes, moods and atmospheres. Staccioli never reworks his photos with Photoshop. His works are the result of hours of empyrical experimentation in the isolation of the artist’s studio, like ancient alchemist and philosophers used to experiment with optics and optical instruments in their discovery of modern science.
