I was covering a story about Flagler Street in Downtown Miami on assignment when I came across James Kendrick playing his accordian, shot this photo and dropped some coins in his cup after he finished playing. He thanked me and we started up a conversation. He told me he was an Elder at a small church in Overtown and that his daughter brought him down to Flagler St. everyday in the morning to play and picked him up a little after mid-day to bring him home. Later while editing the work for the story it struck me how strangely reminiscent the image was of the work of the W.P.A. photographers during the Depression era. Although taken in 1992, it could easily pass for an image taken in the 30's or 40's.

Born in Greenwich Village, New York , Oculus became interested in photography as a child when gifted an old twin-lens reflex camera by a relative. A casual relationship with photography ensued and continued until at the University he became involved in an anthropological study that involved photographing the garbage of numerous residents in a variety of different neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs of New York. Upon reviewing the images for the purpose of creating an inventory of the items found, cataloging and comparing the items in order to draw sociological conclusions, he noticed that many of the images were visually and aesthetically fascinating. It was then that he realized that virtually ‘anything’ could be photographed to produce beautiful images. During the late 80’s through mid 90’s oculus was a regular contributor to the Spanish edition of the Miami Herald and the Miami New Times and has produced work for clients such as Eastman Kodak, PepsiCo, Reuters News Service, Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, Holiday Inn, Paradise Island Resort & Casino, StoCorp, Alcoa, Phelps-Dodge, Warner Bros.,.et al. His work has appeared in numerous publications including newspapers, magazines, brochures, annual reports and textbooks and can be found in corporate and private collections.
