For more than ten years, artist Torsten Solin has been working with the theme of mirroring, as in the series FLOWERS (2000-2005) and MIRROR WORLD (2011). These reminiscent images in part to Rorschach tests emerged from the surrealist method of INVERSAGE, which was defined by the Czech artist Milan Napravnik in 1977. Jacques Lacan states in his theory of the “mirror stage”, that the observer doesn’t see the reflected person in the mirror, but just a picture, an imaginary of it. This is clearly emphasized in the present series through the act of breaking the glass itself. The broken, fragmented, dismembered is sabotaging and irritating the satisfaction of the voyeuristic curiosity of the viewer, asks more imagination, fantasy and does not reduce the distance from the real subject. For the BROKEN MIRRORS series, the artist broke various round and rectangular mirrors and rearranged the broken shards in a controlled though irregular manner, in which the distortions are eminent. The resulting distortion of the face and body leave the mirrored image to be recognized as a whole. However, it also creates at the same time a new, unfamiliar reproduction of the reality that is not only questioning the truth of the reflected image, but also the photography itself. The Broken Mirror is Torsten Solin’s Metaphor for the filter of subjective perception and its role in the mechanisms of construction of identity, reality and truth. It is the contention of the impossibility of any objectivity. “Objectivity is a subject’s delusion that observing can be done without an observer.“ (Heinz von Foerster)

"Torsten Solin's artistic oeuvre is incredibly versatile, employing photography, installation and oil painting in creating his powerful imagery. Using hyper photo-realism combined with old masterly technique, the artist draws his audience into an artificial, gaudy and surreal world, celebrating the beauty of the female form, while piquing the viewers’ voyeuristic curiosity."
