About The Artwork

Four of my grandparents arrived at Ellis Island over a hundred years ago. As my boat approaches just as their’s did, I imagine myself seeing this through their eyes. The skyline is certainly different, but the island feels unchanged. I feel as if I were stepping back in time. What’s been renovated and restored recalls the millions of immigrants it served. Even the parts of the island in ruin recall its former days as if only the completion of a tremendous task could have caused such exhaustion and decay. The main hall became the culminating embodiment of the immigrant having finally made it across the world with all their sacrifice, strength, and hope. The hospital took on the weariness of the immigrant who suffered, who gave everything, perhaps even their hope, and who would not make it to their destination. This photograph was shot on Ilford Delta 100 black & white 35mm film using a 1977 Canon AT1 with a Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 lens and a Samigon 1A 55mm lens filter.

Jake was born in Los Angeles in 1991 and has been on a creative whirlwind of an adventure ever since. Just as much as he’s a Los Angeleno, he’s also a New Yorker thanks to his Italian-family roots he’s gone back to ever since he can remember. Having grown up under the influence and inspiration of Los Angeles and New York has given him an appreciation for identity from community, culture, and tradition. But as great as cities have been to him, he is just as connected to nature thanks to a life full of retreating into the Sierra Mountains for much appreciated recharging and rejuvenation. Among these experiences, Jake has lived in Spokane, WA, studied art in Florence, and traveled many a city, mountain village, and seaside town throughout Europe. Jake would not have been able to appreciate and understand these experiences if it had not been for an importance placed on artistic expression ever since he can remember. Whether it’s writing, music, photography, or painting, these mediums have enhanced his experiences and his experiences have enhanced his art. He thinks some really good things have come from that and he hopes you think the same.
