About The Artwork
This image was taken during a trip to Antarctica’s far southern reaches of the Ross Sea. This lone Emperor Penguin has just emerged from the sea onto the fast ice. With head bowed, he pauses to clean the salt water from his feathers to maintain his waterproof coat. The conditions were absolutely awful, minus 20 degrees with 50 knot winds and swirling snow. Contrary to the bad conditions, I managed to capture a peaceful, dreamlike series of images. I was fortunate that in between the flurries of snow, I was able to capture a beautiful soft light from a very fleeting glimpse of broken sunshine. It was a truly rare experience to be so close to one of the world’s most heralded wildlife species.
