The empty interior is one of the varieties of still life: an old iconographic strategy that never compromises is activated here. The pictorial field is disciplined by the principles of the poet-minimalists: economy of detail, the discovery of hidden subtexts and allusions in unnoticed objects and fragments of the everyday, the mundanity of things. This empty interior, in my 'remembering gaze', recalled the paintings of Johann Vermeer: it almost faithfully reproduced rooms from his paintings. The light streaming in through the high windows illuminates the black and white chequerboard on the floor. Vermeer, like many artists of that era, built his paintings using such geometric elements to create the illusion of three-dimensional space on the flat surface of the painting. I dedicate this photograph to Vermeer, the first artist of the modern era to use the camera obscura to achieve this effect. In a sense, my photograph reveals the secrets of Vermeer's workshop: the photographed room is a mise en scene, a stage set that awaits the protagonists of his paintings: a girl reading a letter, weighing pearls, pouring milk. p evokes the notion of quotation as a guiding principle of re-presentation that refers to other images, iconographic borrowings from the Western painting tradition that are 'invented' in real space and then secondarily aestheticised. In this way, my photography becomes an ontological event that can be 'read' in a purely aesthetic layer. The formal language I have used here has its own significance: sharpness, directness, simplicity of approach, precision of composition - all show that photography is not accidental but, like painting, is capable of producing strong images that realise compositional order as the principle of a compact and disciplined image construction. (ml)The photograph has been awarded and exhibited at the exhibition in the Centre for Contemporary Art "Signs of the Times" in Toruń 2021.
