About The Artwork

On first sight, this presents, simply, if richly, as a portrait of the famous Athenian Erechtheion, in elevation, with its Caryatid porch at left. With patience, destabilizing details emerge. Amid the archaeological scatterings in the foreground, many of the seeming stones turn out to be spotlights set on the building. Much of the stonework of the building itself proves modern replacements, perfect, smooth facsimiles; the bodies and faces of the maidens among them. Even some damage patterns of the ancient, original stone prove not the ravages of longue-durée time, but of modern man—regular, rectilinear, intentional. Tourists, loitering in plain sight but half-hidden in the landscape, consummate the tension between the photograph’s dueling constructs of the fabricated and the genuine. This is from a limited edition of 30 prints, signed by the artist. Printed in Giclee process on Hahnemühle Torchon paper with aqueous ink. Torchon is an acid-free, all-organic, white archival paper with a slight texture. The pigment-based ink provides exceptional, museum-quality longevity and pairs with Torchon paper to deepen and enrich the darker shades of monochrome photography. The photograph is printed with a border of approximately 2 inches, which serves to visually bound the photograph and allow for framing that displays the entire artwork. It also foregrounds the subtle texture of the Torchon paper and serves as space for the artist’s signature and edition number. This border is included in the stated dimension of the photograph. The artwork may arrive up to three weeks after purchase; this allows the artist to ensure proper quality and protection in shipping. Please include a note if you have particular needs regarding timing.

It was his work as a photographer that originally led Jovius to train as an architect and, subsequently, as an historian of architecture. He is a professor of architectural history in the United States, and his academic travel and research allow him to maintain a practice in fine art photography with the world’s constructed landscapes as his primary subject. His artwork addresses the palimpsestic character of urban and structural form, the subtle uncanny in architecture and urban experience, and the entwined and unsteady relationship between our formulations of the natural and of the artificial. He has exhibited his work in both solo and group exhibitions in New York and elsewhere, and his photographs have been featured in hundreds of publications.
