About The Artwork
Fire Horse, 1998 I was at a mass cremation in 1998 organized by Por Teck Tung Foundation for remains there were being cremated at a temple near Bangkok, Thailand. In one area there was a large urn where paper offerings were being burned to honor those who died and to give them good luck for their next life cycle. I shot off a series of photos of the flames and found this image to resemble a horse running. As with clouds in the sky, flames often take on human or animal forms that often do not last very long. I grew up with photography as my father worked as a reporter/photographer in the late 1940s to the early 1950s, before he became involved in the aerospace industry. Through him I became fascinated with the magic of photography. I began to take photo classes in college and later attended Art Center College of Design, graduating in 1976. I had a small studio on Sunset Blvd through the late 1980s then did a trip to Thailand and decided to move there in 1990. Over the years I have worked for Habitat for Humanity, World Vision, and done assignments for The United Nations, Newsweek, Gamma Liaison, Getty Images. Animal Planet, Homeless International and other organizations in Asia.
