Recall looking down at your reflection in a pool of water, lake, or the ocean, at how the reflection stretches, twists, and moves with the movement of the water. This is a photograph of the surface of the ocean at night, during a full moon. The white lines are the reflection of the moon. But rather than capturing a split second in time which would produce a single white dot on the black water's surface, the shutter was kept open for 30 seconds, allowing the ocean waves to move the moon's reflection, leaving a trail as it zig zagged back and forth. This required precise conditions, including a full moon, cloudless sky, just the right amount of undulation, absence of flying insects, and water free of floating particles. A camera and lens capable of capturing the tiny spot of light had to hover motionless perpendicular to the ocean surface in windy conditions for 30 seconds at a time. This image is one of only four successful captures out of hundreds of photographs taken over three moon cycles.
