This image is part of my second series of Fractured Flora images. I use liquid nitrogen to cryo freeze the and then shatter each floral specimen. In this series I aimed to explore the two sides of my process which is essentially part art, part science. The images themselves focus on the science, exploring the shapes of the broken edges and the vapour that swirls around the flowers. I edited this series with a nod to Dutch Vanitas still life, the images are moody with the flowers emerging from dark backgrounds.

I am a botanical alchemist. I use liquid nitrogen to transmute botanicals from soft biological things into something momentarily fragile beyond even the most delicate porcelain. I then gleefully smash or fracture these specimens and photograph the results – quickly before they disintegrate into oxidised mush.
