Memory is who we are. Everything we have learned and experienced is contained within our memories. However, memory is not infallible and when we remember images from the past they might not be a true reflection of events. Over time our memories can begin to change, distort and even fade. I began by using water as a metaphor to communicate my ideas because although water can reflect images it is distorted and inaccurate. Shortly after I had begun to think about these themes I was physically assaulted and received a severe concussion. Remembering and thus using one’s memory is often described as reflecting. When I try to reflect back on the incident my memories become distorted so they don’t make a lot of sense, just like a reflection in water, it isn’t a true or ‘real’ image. When I think I have finally caught hold of an image/memory it always seems to slip away and fade, just as water always slips through your fingers when you try to grasp it.
