About The Artwork

The Gowanus Canal, and the land surrounding it, is toxic. It is also very beautiful and very valuable. Those of us who have grown to love the Canal and its environs may likely mourn its passing some day. Where now there is a haunting, gritty, chimerical beauty, there may some day be another predictable high rise condominium; where now artists work in old silos and warehouses, franchise stores may some day rise up. Although I have photographed Gowanus numerous times over the years, it was only in 2009 that I first made images that felt deeply satisfying to me. These efforts of mine culminated at a time when the canal and the surrounding neighborhood appeared to be at a crossroads, and perhaps, that is why the Canal finally gave up its secrets to me. Or, perhaps my creativity was awakened by the immediacy of either development or federal superfund intervention. There were, and still are, pressing concerns and interests at stake. What the community does and how it gathers its forces may ultimately provide the answers to these complex issues. My Gowanus Impressions series is limited to twenty editions. This photograph was included in Abrams Books critically acclaimed book, New York in Color, curated by Bob Shamis. Seventeen photographs from the Gowanus Impressions series is in the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Historical Society

I earn my living as a portrait photographer, but my personal work is all about the urban environment. Living in Brooklyn virtually all my life has provided a veritable cornucopia of inspirational opportunities for me to experiment and expand my oeuvre. Living near the Gowanus Canal and the industrial area that surrounds it whetted my appetite to create my series, "Gowanus Impressions". For many years I have been inspired by the work of precisionist painters and photographers such as Charles Sheeler, Edward Hopper, Ralston Cranford, Paul Strand and others who experimented with a highly controlled approach to technique and form, particularly as it related to the industrial revolution. Their sense of logic, geometric shape and purity has informed my own work. My series, "Views from the Train" reflect these influences.
