This is a photo from a series of hands I made for a project Vulcanus in the Netherlands, Utrecht. On all photos of this project, The Hands of Vulcanus, you'll see only hands. They were made in the De Vulcan's - an apartment building in Utrecht. A gathering place for people from all corners of the world. Diverse and colorful. They are people who have had an eventful life, and you'll see that too. Not people who are pre-eminently visible or who can make themselves visible. Nor were they people who were jumping to take a picture. They have little contact with each other and would rather not have their face in the picture. When some of them agreed, after hesitating and saw what the photo was about on the LCD screen of my camera, they were truly touched. Sometimes one part of the body can be very expressive. Hands are so very honest. Someone can still be tough, but his hands show who he, really, is. For example, this was a man who was completely under the tattoos, but when you saw how tenderly he put his hand on the other's, you see that it is worth reading your hands. Magnifying Beauty. I seek beauty in the way in which the combination of different images evoke an experience. For me, photography is more than capturing the perfect moment. Every time I try to capture my astonishment with a single photo, I am disappointed. This was not what I want to see and feel. It is larger, more complex, more diffuse. I have to bring all those fragments together. In compositions in which they together tell a story that transcends my understanding. So, that every time I look at it, I can be surprised again. All the photographic technology that we have to capture our world in images may give us the idea that we really "see" it. But nothing gives me more liberty than letting go of this straight way of observing, in order to experience the shortest route to wonder, and the love that follows from it. I use modern technology to find a visual language that exceeds the photographic moment, so that there is sufficient room for the complexity of what we call reality.
