Take things as they are. Punch when you have to punch. Kick when you have to kick Bruce Lee The use of narrative as a visual form of expression is nothing new. Derek Walker uses signage and printmaking to deliver word play through letter and matter. Sometimes the text is cropped and laid out with no spaces between words to force the viewer slow down and avoid quickly reading the statement. Instead the viewer is invited to decipher the structure of the sentence allowing time to absorb the surface demanding that they are not just read but looked too. Surfaces and expression appear in the work through nods and gestures of abstract expression. We tease our friends and use sarcasm as a front avoiding sincerity until it’s absolutely necessary. We restlessly take the piss out of ourselves and people even if we like or dislike them. This can sometimes be perceived as nasty, especially without context and delivery and if the recipients aren’t used to it. Walker is brutally honest about art and himself producing work as the underdog dishing out equal portions of cynicism and self-deprecation, When he expresses the desire to thump Turk or twat Jopling, he does it as the failure figure, he is aligning them ready to spa, bare knuckle, but also to shamelessly promote his own position within the ring to question whether these people are too big to fail. These images are more like play fighting, a sign of affection, a wanting to be included and be inclusive. The work tries to go the distance gesturing towards a different kind of truth by taking things as they are and that makes them more compelling.
