About The Artwork

Derek Walker doesn't apologise for his choice of a default font and this will no doubt make designers turn to drink and typoholoics consider rehab. For the current 'I could' series the artist has chosen what he calls a 'cheap plonk font' wanting to use a style of character that creates the right impersonal tone, flat and emotionless leaving a lurid aftertaste. It was important for him to avoid being blinded by font paralysis and after looking for a design that would neither shout nor whisper he decided upon the unfashionable, low end, Arial. 'This font is straight faced and contradicts the galling outburst of the phrases I have visualised'. Perhaps in this case choosing a font usually associated with supermarket posters is the right choice, it is cheap without warmth or feeling, lacking self indulgence. This series of work doesn't seem to do Walker any favours within the art and design community but then it's clear that Walker isn't trying to please anyone. Anonymity is now a temporary condition and visibility is the definition of success. We have dreams and goals that we strive to meet, and when we don’t meet them we have no one else to blame but ourselves. The pieces appear to gesture towards retrospective envy where Walker recognises the artists, Hirst, Kapoor, The Chapmans and Gilbert or George are a merchandise brand. 'Tracey Emin is one of those artists worth biting' He latches onto the brand extension of the artist’s name to turn envy upside down- turning it into self-improvement rather than perpetual negative consumption. ‘Envy of the tangible and intangible can show us the things we would like to improve or change. Benign envy is always about a potential gain whereas jealously is about a potential loss’. Of course we don’t feel that success of these artists is undeserved. It helps if you compare yourself to the right person, someone within your league, at a level you can reach, just far enough away to give them another punch, a smooch or even a bite.
