About The Artwork

Holy Week is fervently celebrated in Quito, with the highlight being La Procesión del Jesús del Gran Poder on Good Friday. The procession features numerous significant religious figures, with the Cucurucho standing out as one of the most recognizable. Clad in purple, the Cucurucho symbolizes souls in a state of penitence, seeking redemption for their sins. This references the medieval tradition of public penitence, where individuals publicly atoned for their wrongdoings. In a contemporary twist, I captured the Cucurucho checking his phone, offering a Quitenian humor reference to the irony of the scene. The timing was perfect as helpers watered the Cucurucho's feet. I've infused the artwork with flowers and baroque signs, embodying the quintessential style that depicts the most important religious motifs of Quitenian Art. Additionally, the Latin humoristic reference mirrors the tradition of explaining and signing Quitenian art pieces in previous centuries. This digital artwork will be printed on matte paper, ensuring an immersive experience, accompanied by a special greeting from the artist. It is presented unframed, and while framing is recommended for optimal display, please note that hardware is not included.t included.

An Ecuadorian artist, navigates the local artistic landscape with a distinctive approach, diverging from the typical dichotomy prevalent among Quitenian artists. Rather than aligning with the bohemian left or the elite, art-educated right, Angela embraces her identity as an ambitious Quitenian with a down-to-earth perspective. Balancing her artistic pursuits with a middle-class sensibility, Angela introduces a unique voice in the narrative of Ecuador's art scene. She modestly considers herself a sui generis expressionist, influenced by her early exposure to art through her mother, Angie, and the captivating oil-painting sessions with her aunt-in-law, the esteemed artist Micaela Almeida.Angela's artistic journey began with humble doodles of flowers, symbolizing intimacy and family bonds. Her style, marked by an indiscriminate use of colors, reflects her innate creativity. Turning to digital mediums for expression, she reserves traditional materials for moments of artistic freedom. Angela, embracing vulnerability, desires a return to the simplicity of white canvases. She discreetly embeds messages in her art, inviting viewers to discover joy in nature scenes, and showcasing Quitenian humor with humility and depth.
