This is the second of 19 photographs exhibited under the collective name Rhythm in the Art Gallery of Cultural Institution Parobrod in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. A series that was exposed during August and September is unique because of the way the photographic liquid emulsion is applied with a brush. Spontaneous brush strokes make every single photograph unique. Rhythm is by definition any regularly repeating movement. From my point of view, rhythm represents life, as it carries dynamics, movement, and noise, unlike silence. Even in medicine, the silence of a heart machine means the opposite of life. However, this is not a boring repetitive beat, but a fun, unpredictable rhythm that breaks the rules and the symmetry. Lindy Hop and Swing rely on the improvisation of the dancers and are very social and exciting. In this series, through the tension of the body, the effort of movements, jumps, and turns, I tried to present life in its full intensity. After years of digital photography, I am returning to my roots, the shadows on the red walls of the laboratory lighting. Sometimes we might fall under the influence of dreamy filters, trends of cheap tricks of digital communication. But there is the good old, strict teacher, the photographic craft that requires skill and patience and does not forgive mistakes. The healing properties of silver are well known. In the chemistry of silver salts, I had to clean the taste corrupted by deceptions of digital photography and direct myself once again towards the old noble craft – Her Highness – Analogue photography. The quote from Yusuf Karsh: “Character, like photography, develops in darkness.” summarizes this introduction.
