Caravaggio meets Tarantino An intensely colourful series of marvellous cinematographic pictures. At first glance, we see an almost abstract spectacle of light and dark, deep colours, sensual compositions and frozen movements. When looking a bit closer, one discovers that the so preciously brushed silhouettes are actually Nishikigoi, the noble Japanese fish aka Koi. In Japanese, koi is a homophone for another word that means ‘affection’ or love’; Koi are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan. "I accidently came across the subject while waiting during a photo shoot. I was fascinated by their movements - now extremely quiet, then suddenly skittish. The play of light and colours, and the ever-changing compositions made a wonderful spectacle. I focussed on what happens just under the dark water surface. The result was a series of graphically interesting snapshots, so I decided to actually do something with it and organized a real photo shoot with Kois. I worked out a set with black cloths over the Koi basins, to diminish reflection and to enhance the colours in the black water. The outcome is a series of 7 images which very much look like paintings, as well as a still from a movie. "It was a long search for the right compositions – after all it’s the Kois who decide; I had to be very patient and could only manipulate their movements a bit by luring them with food”, explains Callewaert, who took over a 100 pictures. It was worth it.
