Considering the likes of Muybridge's ‘Woman walking downstairs’, Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 and Richter's 'Ema' and particularly Delacroix's study 'Seated Nude, Mademoiselle Rose', in this study of my wife I wanted to achieve a very sensitive and subtle sensuality and honesty. I use multiple-exposure photography to achieve a painterly quality where the painterliness is as much an emergent property of the 'reality' that has been recorded and processed (though a manual algorithm), as it is the result of my aesthetic whims and objectives. These works dance on the spectrum between diagrammatic and embodied image, trying to reconcile objective and intimate 'truth'. While in other works I have used the multiple exposures to expand perspective, texture and compositional dynamics, here it simply allows the subtle movements of breath to express in a gentle sketch-like manner the body and the anima. Image 486 mm x 345 mm, on sheet 586 mm x 454 mm, 310 gsm Hahnemuhle Bright White Photo Rag, deckled edge.
