About The Artwork

The Living Root Bridges of Khasi Hills, India is a unique example of bonding between Man and Nature. In one of earth’s wettest regions, the Khasi tribe have been able to nurture and understand how to survive in this environment by harmonizing Man’s ingenuity with the powerful gifts of Nature. The Living Root Bridges are an organic way of building access across turbulent monsoon rivers. These Bridges were painstakingly made by training aerial roots of a rubber fig - Ficus Elastica to roots of a similar tree from the other side till they overlap midway and keep growing. It is decades before the bridges take shape, let alone grow sturdy enough to carry people over. The Bridge we now see is the germination of years of patient coaxing of the native's hands complimented by the determined progress of the living roots. It is almost certain that its pioneers never could live out their dreams of walking across their creations in their lifetimes. For the Khasi here, it is a living witness, and a reminder, that, in this day and age of technology and competition, our forefathers were gifted with the sagacity and raw altruism to forge a structure which would ease our transition to the future.

The series of photographs here are my journey back after a long break from photography for almost fifteen years. My first brush with photography was as an eight year old capturing, what i thought inspiring, of festive scenes among my tribal community in north eastern India. Times have changed the way we capture and manipulate images. The spirit of photography have nonetheless blurred the huge gap between Analogue and Digital, and here i am egged on back to a love rediscovered.
