About The Artwork

In the illustrious map room of a well-established London cartography shop my feet in dirt-caked sneakers were instinctively driven to stand at a certain spot. That spot saw me sigh a silent gust of breath that I knew very well was not sourced by my own lungs but, that, it was the strained voice of my brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and of children old enough to be my own. Their homes lay on both sides of an age-old disputed line, a story of conflict that had been played far too many times before and which has formed the most tragic layers of sedimentation in the archives of human history. I quietly reflected on the devilish ease with which maps were printed, how deceptively simple they presented themselves to the navigator and to the interested reader. The same could not be said for my heart. It had trembled and shivered as I stood there because I felt safe knowing that nothing could stop me from standing there and yet a laughable pain seared through my conscience for it accepted that the truth was an entirely different matter. Maps are indeed charlatans of simplicity, editors to the god of pragmatism, the most adept illusionists designed to fit in your hand or, in this case, be walked over. But, the heart, my friends, is as unmapped and borderless as the dreams one has in the womb, its stretch of sight is mysterious and that is why I had felt things that day that no map could ever hope to label… © Masufa Khatun | Mazzy Khatun Photo Stories | Central London | UK 2014

An ardent visual storyteller, I am a self-taught photographer who continuously seeks to lens-pen and archive fleeting moments of life's eccentricities, to capture flashes of pictorial haikus encountered in my everyday walkabouts and to use the frame as a time capsule by which to illuminate the often neglected richness, splendour and depth of the story of the individual. My trusty partner in all my ventures is a Panasonic Lumix whom everyone in my circle has come to know as 'Lumiere'. Now you do too! Update 2014! Lumiere has a new buddy: a pretty Leica prime lens otherwise known as 'Laika'!
