Digital print on archival paper. Limited edition 1/50 estate stamp print. Guy Webster photographed virtually every major musical act during the postwar years, from The Beach Boys and The Doors to The Rolling Stones, Liza Minnelli, and Sonny and Cher. Drawn to photography during a stint with the United States Army Reserve, Webster started his career in music after a friend asked him to shoot album covers for a record label. Working exclusively in black and white due to the cost-prohibitive nature of color film, Webster created iconic, occasionally controversial album covers for bands such as The Mamas & the Papas, Barry McGuire, The Byrds, and The Who. Webster favors hazy images over crisp photographs and considers himself “more of an artist than a photographer.” His photographs appear like paintings in order to express emotional subtleties and capture the feeling of 1960s and 1970s music culture.
