At a roadside medieval shrine in Carcassonne, the Virgin Mary and her son stare out from iron bars that both imprison them and safeguard them. Mary's eyes wonder at the world outside that continually passes before her eyes; her own holiness is confirmed by transforming light that reveals her absolute humanity, while at the same time her eyes seek something that is not before her, and is certainly not of the watcher's world. The bars are like windows through which we peer into another time, another dimension of faith. We absolutely cannot touch, and can barely see at first. Her baby, here doll-like, seems far more human and less ethereal than his mother. Mary is human yet transformed into something divine by nature of her direct experience of God. Her face communicates trust but also enormous vulnerability. Unlike other icons and statues, this Mary of Carcassonne is eternally human, ordinarily maternal, yet peering into a place we cannot see with her. We can only bear her witness.
