About The Artwork

After being asked for the third time about doing a tarot deck of my own, I began to shoot the Major Arcana of that self-same deck in 2016, accepting my defeat. Inspired by All of the Things in my head - especially George Miller’s Mad Max franchise - I have committed myself to a lifework project of 78 portraits/still life images depicting each card in a tarot deck. This image, Magician, is from its companion series, From the Waste; images taken at the same time as the shooting of the primary Cards. In this case, from The Magician where I managed to cast the last seconds of Golden Hour in a completely unplanned portrait. The model in question is my son. An enormous amount has already happened in my life and in the world at large since the commencement, let alone since the first shot was taken of the Apocalyptica. So much so that I have clung to this project at times as if my very life depended on it. Because it has. It's been my salvation as I have faced mental illness, cancer, divorce, and yes, death. Too much death, for how could I have foretold the Plague that would visit itself upon us all? And yet, here I am making art about transformation and hope and the future, set in a dystopic Wasteland of my own imagining via... tarot cards. I hope to transport the viewer to another world; a world where hope is not dead and redemption can still be found. I print the images on aluminum metal plate with the color dye bonded to the metal. It looks like car paint and when the light hits it just right, it looks like it's illuminated from within. Because as they say on the fury road, may we ride shiny and chrome forever. Witness me.
