My family lived in this village in the late 1980’s / early 1990’s, a typical New Territories village in Hong Kong. Every weekend the people of the village would play Mahjong till the early hours. The clack of shuffling mahjong tiles could be heard throughout the village. This sound is fading as the younger generation does not enjoy the game as much any more. I love to remember the sound as it awakens old memories of days gone by in this Pearl of the Orient.

At a young age I moved from my native Austria to Asia. I took 888 pictures of ordinary life in the Middle Kingdom. Sometimes I like to manipulate photos with bright colours. 8 is a very suspicious number in Chinese culture. This number brings luck. Now I live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada on the traditional and unceded Territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, the traditional territory of the Snaw - naw - as First Nation. I love to take pictures of the beautiful scenery on this island in the Pacific Ocean. Sometimes I like to play with colours here as well. My cover photo shows tree art in Nanoose Bay, my favourite place down on the water.
