About The Artwork

Photographed in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico The shortfin mako is one of the most advanced apex predators on the planet, possessing the largest brain to body ratio of all of the sharks, and unique adaptations. Small pores along its body sense minute disturbances within the water column in all directions, providing a three dimensional map by “feel”. Ampullae within the snout are sensitive enough to detect the smallest electrical impulses of life. Warm blooded, they are capable of speeds beyond 40mph and can breech beyond 20 feet above the surface. Unlike any other shark species, they utilize strategy and skill rather than opportunity. While formidable predators, in studies they demonstrate impressive critical reasoning and social skills. Despite these unique qualities and an essential role in a healthy ocean ecosystem, the mako is quickly becoming defeated against it’s largest threat: humans. Listed as endangered in 2019 due to hunting for sport, meat, and fins, it is expected that populations will continue to decline until 2035, even with a complete halt to fishing. 15% of print profits of this image directly support mako conservation within the Sea of Cortez; one of the last three locations on the planet with significant populations of this incredible shark. Available in editions of 12”x18”, 24”x36” and 40”x60” Editions of 11"x14" and 20"x30" are sold out. Artwork is printed by a master printer on Hahnemuehle Fine Art paper for exceptional quality. Prints are numbered and signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Samantha Schwann is an international award-winning underwater photographer whose work concentrates on ecologically unique areas of the ocean. A portion of print profits directly supports marine conservation initiatives.
