Encounters with a Stranger: Portraits, Places and Objects The discovery of strange, peculiar, different, unusual in self and other, in a process of observing and being observed. Yangon, former capital of Myanmar. A vibrant, busy, diverse place, a city for varied people, images of a city in constant change, taken in different locations and seasons. This is the place the photographer dived into and dwells in, a place new to him, him a foreigner, a stranger, an observer and object of observation. This project started at the strangers’ arrival in Myanmar, July 2014. The stranger/observer came with little preconceptions and prior knowledge, not knowing what to expect, not knowing what and whom to find. Not having been here before. The photographer/observer/stranger wanders, gets lost, mingles, enters a society alien to him, a strange world. Is it culture, is it tradition, what is the difference, is there any difference, is he creating the difference, is he the difference. He is trying to put himself in the place of the photographed; the photographer is a stranger the object too. He does not know the country, the people, the places he is trying to capture with his camera. Spontaneously he takes the picture, there is a contest between the photographer and everything and everybody he tries to capture. The common ground is the camera, between two strange worlds. Taking a picture, sometimes in agreement with the actor, sometimes the photographer gets close to his target without warning and takes the desired image, here tension and doubt overcome the action. Will he be accepted, will he be rejected? A stranger encountering another stranger, a city and its objects. A joint language evolves, an amazing language, between two people not knowing each other, the language of image, two people with completely different backgrounds, occupations, experiences, feelings. The pictures of this exhibition show a society in continuous change and a rooted society at the same time. Subjectivity versus open mind, the basis for the selection of the pictures, when shot and when exhibited and not only decided by the photographer, in many occasions the photographed actively requested to face the camera, to become part of an exhibition they don’t know about. Waiting patiently for the camera to capture them, their mood, life, thoughts…. The only thing left between the strangers is the picture: the person, the child, the place, the object.
