About The Artwork

"MATRICE" The name MATRICE refers to an archaic Italian word for "mother" or "model". In fact, Matrice depicts the face of a sculpture model the art studio of H.S. Ray crafted in clay and then in plaster. This model was then used as a visual and measurement reference to hand sculpt this artwork from pure Statuary marble, You can clearly see the pencil marks that fix precise points on her face, that are transfered to the marble block by means of an arcane wooden contraption that hasn't changed since the Renaissance. These points indicate to the sculptor where he has to chisel and how far deep he has to go into the marble. In the end, however, the rough sculpture that derives from this work must be completed free-hand, and the final results are based on the talent and skills of the sculptor. Matrice is part of the vast model collection of Ray, kept in a repository for whenever she is required again as a muse, to inspire and guide the hand of the artist intent on reproducing her beauty and allure in stone. Hence, the name of the collection of art photos she is a part of: : “THE SECRET LIVES OF MODELS". The spectacle of seeing all the modesl together gives one the distinct impression that when alone, these artistic wonders take on a life of their own, not tied to the needs and whims of their users, but animated by their own desires. Matrice looks deeply into you in this photo, while silently giving you hints about her storied past. Ray has for the last 23 years documented with his photography, art and artistic works created by his studio and works by internationally renowned and emerging artists. His current series is the culmination of his efforts towards simplicity and clarity. Ray’s photos are all printed on the highest quality Baryta paper, guaranteeing the greatest detail and definition, tonal range with excellent archival properties, each photo comes with a signed and numbered authentication certificate. The end quest of H.S. Ray is that of using the 2D world of photography to bring the appreciation of the 3D reality of excellent sculpture more easily into the homes of discerning collectors.

After leaving the U.S. to live in the home town of my immigrant mother from Italy, I departed for a world-travelling adventure that took me for extended periods of time through 40 countries during the span of 15 years. I always returned to Italy, where I still today stably work from. After conducting business in various sectors tied to foreign trade, I set my sites on exploring the field my maternal grandfather worked in: marble. In fact he operated a quarry in Carrara and I wanted to use this extraodinary material to create unique artworks and architectural elements. This I did through the creation of my own artistic studio and of a de-facto consortium comprised of some of the finest artistic artisans and artists in the city of Pietrasanta, where I reside, along the northern coast of Tuscany. My passion for photography grew constantly through my using this medium to document the artworks and architecture created by my studio and the consortium. Finding the ideal settings and views of these works became my mission and this sparked the idea I developed of Art Photography concentrated on photographing unique art. From that moment on, I photographed the works of internationally acclaimed artists as well as the up and coming. The important point to me was creating shots that presented that one ideal and “mythic” vision of a work, in a manner that not even the actual artwork itself could represent. 23 years have passed now, and my fervor working in all aspects of artistic creation has only grown. My work still involves the creation of sculptural art, architecture, design in these and other areas and collecting artwork myself as well. Being immersed in these realities has permitted me to see my objectives as a photographer better. My current focus is on a series of works that have the subject of sculptures by internationally renowned master artist Igor Mitoraj. The heirs to Mitoraj have in their collection these works, which I consider an honor as they put the utmost attention on Mitoraj’s work, legacy and image. I am also dedicated to a series of works that depict clay-to-plaster sculptural models used by sculptors. This series is an intimate look at these often sensual and always beautiful works of art, some contemporary and others centuries old, that act as muses for artists, providing the inspiration and the measurement references to them as guidance. I call this series of works “The Secret Lives of Models”.
