About The Artwork

The Mountains to Plains Project is a collaborative habitat conservation effort consisting of contributions from willing landowners, The Nature Conservancy, Larimer County Open Lands Program, Legacy Land Trust, the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Program, and Great Outdoors Colorado. The project protects over 55,000 acres of land. The purpose of the Mountains to Plains Project is to aid conservation and management of grasslands in Colorado, Bird Conservancy of the Rockies has partnered with the City of Fort Collins to inventory and monitor grassland birds on city-owned properties in Larimer and Weld counties. The project began in 2006 and 2007 on Soapstone Prairie Natural Area, expanded significantly in 2008 and 2009 with the incorporation of Meadow Springs Ranch and Round Butte Ranch, and grew again in 2010 with the addition of the Bernard Ranch. These properties support breeding populations of more than 20 high-priority bird species, primarily grassland species, recognized by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Partners in Flight, the U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan, The Nature Conservancy and other conservation groups In June 2009, Larimer County’s Red Mountain Open Space and the City of Fort Collins’ Soapstone Prairie Natural Area become open to the public. The two properties are connected and bounded by the southern border of Wyoming which includes 30 miles of interconnected trails. The City of Cheyenne owns 1,800 acres along Wyoming’s southern border with trails that connect to the Red Mountain Open Space and Soapstone Prairie Natural Areas. Some digital effects were applied to the original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition. Image copyright 2020 Jon Burch Photography.

Photography is all about using light to capture the emotion and the beauty of a fleeting moment. For me, this adventure began with a single spring image using a small Kodak film camera of a freshly watered central Kansas ditch and has come full circle using modern digital techniques. My first camera was acquired by trading an ancient Royal typewriter to a fellow college student who was desperate to finish a term paper. It was a long time ago and that camera was my passport to an art that has fascinated me ever since. I owned and operated a professional photography studio for 20 years. Part of the studio's early success came from creating outdoor portraiture using controlled lighting that my clients were used to seeing only in studio-produced images. In addition to portraits of all types, business and corporate, family, glamour, bridal, and high school seniors, the studio's operations included a video recording studio and an on-site color production lab that produced award-winning, heritage-quality color portraits. Photographs are little slices of time. I offer only top quality images for your enjoyment and inspection. Discover the difference; I am available for assignment.
