About The Artwork

The work created and presented in this visual compendium ennobles details that exist in the singularity of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, presented by the artist in a language that is unique in terms of both its artistic results and the technique used. The result is a pictorial work with precise characteristics, such as the contrast between light and dark, structure, color composition, spatial unfoldings, background perspective, transparence, a blend between abstraction and figuration. The work is, however, photographic and created by Cristina Schleder as the result of a search springing from her subjective impulse. This allows her discover and see details that were previously unknown, or unnoticed by less observant gazes. Her compositions and the aesthetic result are faithful to the Brazilian cultural legacy that has persisted through many generations and historical contexts, beginning either with the condition of the country before its discovery, in its most natural and pristine state, or at the first moment after its discovery, with the European influence that introduced the baroque to the national territory. The images created by Cristina Schleder, incorporate all of this heritage in their essence! At first sight, the works resemble a refined sort of camouflage, with a well-elaborated weave, a sophisticated artisanal lace, or even an age-old tapestry. Therein lies the artist’s interference and skill as she takes singular details of the Atlantic Forest and turns them into matchless treasures. For her, each of the images comes complete with sounds, smells, textures and even tiny particles of the moisture found permanently in the region. This entire complex universe guides her to the final process of the composition and elaboration of the images presented here. Contemporary art, goes beyond beauty and the botanical importance of the representation of nature per se. The artistic resources, as well as the frontiers of creativity and technical reproduction, are totally malleable and open to the action of their protagonists. Cristina Schleder makes use of this reality and explores all the available resources and possibilities, both in the microcosm of her research as well as in themacrocosm of her creativity and talent. The photos are witnesses of the wealth found in nature by the artist and of her skill in creating new, previously unexplored surfaces. Tereza de Arruda - Curator and Historian … and the little girl loved to run to the forest when the rain went away and left its moisture covering the vegetation, allowing the new watercolors to sprout from the tree trunks. Sparkles, colors and textures transformed that environment into an enchanted world. The forest’s new clothes allowed her to say goodbye to the world that was outside the sanctuary. She was fascinated to see all of those trees singing and dancing for joy upon feeling her presence. There was a telepathic feeling between them. The two worlds were transformed into one. The forest sheltered her, held her in its lap, allowing her to know the duality of the macro/micro world and its most closely guarded secrets. Her eyes were able to make real the small invisible beings that appeared, seated in the air and smiling at her. Whenever they met each other, she would remember the stories in which the characters traveled on flying carpets. The truth of this magical thought could bring her to all the imagined places, seated on her own flying carpet, which the forest, with its threads, webs and embroideries, wove especially for her. All over her 35 years of career, Cristina Schleder has been showing and representing nature. The techniques used in this journey eventually enabled the realization of her unconscious. Its reflection is shown in the whole of her work. The symbiosis moved on reflecting her personal trajectory. Her career began in painting. Through acrylic paint on canvas, she geometrically constructed her representation on how she felt nature. Each shape, with its color and meaning, told a story carrying the artist claims and troubles. Resins based on soil and sand, developed by the artist, started to be introduced in her painting. After that she has brought the application of organic materials. At the same time, in this period, she was art director of the Brazilian “Interview Magazine” for 8 years. She also designed furniture, clothing and jewelry. She made set design and costumes. The three-dimensionality in her work happened when Cristina separated in multiple canvas the various areas that constituted her painting. From there on, the works started to permit endless clusters, also composed by the addition of different volumes of the canvas. In 2000 she plunged into collage, paper on paper. A technique in which she is involved up to now. In that same year she wrote the book “The Phoenix”, published the following year. Five years ago photograph came up as another form of expression, which ended up with the publication of the book “The Flying Carpets of the Atlantic Forest”. In this work she repeatedly uses what she calls the photo/matrix and joins them rebuilding thus, a new image. It can be said that also here, there is the collage work.
